Walking back to happines.......

"Yes," I said, when my friend asked me if I'd like to go to the movies last Sunday afternoon, "shall we walk there?"
"Sure," he replied, "lets start at Greenwich."
And so we took the DLR to Greenwich, a fun trip in itself, and then walked, under the Thames, along the river to Limehouse and then up Regent's Canal to Islington........ 8 miles in two and a half hours, through cyclists and dog walkers, high winds and spiky rain, with no equipment, training or support vehicle. As we triumphantly arrived at the cinema we did feel like we'd been away, a long way away but now we were back. And people should know. Where were the balloons? The t-shirts? Not even a badge?
And lest we forget....... somewhere the sun is shining.....

Top tip: walking is excellent exercise for all ages and less lightly to cause the hip and knee injuries often sustained by the more mature runners.

  2. Oh this walk sounds perfectly delightful. Nothing like walking, seeing the sights and getting in your daily exercise. Fabulous multi-tasking!

  6. Reminds me of turning up in London for the Chelsea Flower Show to find there was a tube strike. So knackered when we got there spent most of the day in the Pimms tent.

  7. A spur of the moment walk like that doesn't feel like a chore or a marathon. I imagine.

  8. This is exactly the kind of London walk that I absolutely love, I'd have been very happy accompanying you :)

I haven't been on a long walk along the canal for a very long time, you have inspired me.

    Happy Week-end :)

PS Your "we're back" comment really made me smile....where are the balloons indeed ;)

  15. No cheering crowds, either? Eight miles to the flickers deserves some sort of acknowledgement.

  18. City walking is the best. I admire gardens and avoid dogs if Felix is with me. I hike a lot too. We have beautiful mountains in the NW US and I spend a s much time as I can in them.

  19. I was an avid gym goer but as I've got to my mid-forties, I was finding my knees were definitely suffering. Now I walk 3-5 miles every morning, briskly with "Women's Hour" pod-cast on my iPod. I've actually lost weight and feel a lot better, it seems to wake me up and feel much more energetic during the day. City walking is great too, me and my mum-in-law do a fab one along the canal from Salford Media City to the centre of Manchester.
