Movie magic.......

It's not just 007 who's confused by the modern world. While standing on the platform waiting for the tube train, I read an advert on the wall opposite and honestly I understood not one word. I think it was something to do with apps but frankly it could have been for anything....... to me they were speaking in tongues.

I went to see Skyfall and I loved it...... on every level. I can remember discovering the intriguing covers of the well thumbed paperbacks by Ian Flemming, on my Grandmother's bookshelf, amazed that the films were once novels. As a child being taken to the pictures is what my family did ...... as a family. And a new Bond movie was a big deal. To me, they are as much about my Dad as they are about Bond and he would have loved this one. After the horror that was Casino Royale, Daniel Craig's first outing as our hero, I emerged from the cinema definitely shaken but certainly not stirred. So dreadful was it I didn't even bother with the next one, feeling sure it would be a quantum of crap. But Mendes .... Sam Mendes..... has indeed saved the day. It wasn't just that craggy-Craig is so much better than wet-Craig, and that Javier Bardem cutting his toenails would probably be worth at least an Oscar nomination..... in my book. It was like being wrapped in big, fluffy blanket of nostalgia....... a reminder of a world I understood, a world of radio transmitters, exploding pens and my Dad. I loved it so much I went again, just like I did when I was a kid.
I read an article.... in a newspaper....... about children in a remote village in Ethiopia with no school, almost untouched by modern technology, and with not a word of English, who were each given a tablet.....no, not a pill, a computer........ but not given any instruction on how to use it and hay presto! Within 3 months they had not only sussed out how to turn the tablet on but were learning to speak English and singing the ABC song. I wonder how far I'd get if some one gave me a tablet?

Top tip: Go see Skyfall.......... Javier Bardem is worth the price of the ticket alone.....

  1. Really? Bond? Sean Connery used to make me, um, aroused. And to think how effing sexist those films were. Who knew.

  2. I'm dying to see Skyfall but I'm holding out until the masses have seen it, that way my viewing won't be spolit by texting, nacho muching teenagers with any luck!
I've loved both Daniel Craig's Bond outings, reading the paperbacks he's far more like Fleming's hero. xxx

  3. I can't wait to see Skyfall, we've tried to get tickets a couple of times but it keeps selling out! I do think Javier is the perfect Bond Baddie.

  4. Hello:
We know exactly what you mean about wanting so desperately to see a Bond who captures the essence of Fleming's original hero. We have now heard so many accolades for Skyfall that we are sorely tempted to pay good money and see it!

As it happens, the French model, Eric Monjoin, who plays opposite Daniel Craig in the latest 007 inspired Heineken advertisement, was languishing in the Budapest Four Seasons Hotel bar just the other evening. We almost invited him to lunch....and now we wished we had!!!

  5. Saw it, loved it and would be happy to go again! I guess we have grown up with Bond and it looks as though we will be going into old age with him aswell x

  8. Skyfall is on my list ...... I love Daniel Craig and really 'see' him as JB......he is very like Steve McQueen for me (not a JB himself I know but would have made a great one I think) and that's no bad thing !!!! XXXX

  9. So agree with all you said. I loved it, but since then I have read lots of media comments saying how misogynistic it is. I didn't see that, I just loved the escapism, and Javier Bardem as a camp villian!

  10. It was a stroke of genius to dye Javier Bardem's hair blond for the role - made him so sinister. I'm afraid DC doesn't do it for me. All muscle and no charm. JB was a ladies man in the books but doesn't come across that way in the films....

  11. I thought Casino was ok but Quantum wasn't that good at all but Skyfall - best Bond movie since the sixties I'd wager. Loved it

  12. Seen it, loved it - and him. Just love Bond really. But you may be right: it may be something about family and father in particular.

  13. It will be a while before it hits our Island cinema, but I will go to see it. Great tablet story.

  14. I love the connections in this. When I was a little kid, my other friends' parents took us to see James Bond. Thunderball was the first. I had no idea what was going on in that bed, but was deliciously shocked and intrigued nonetheless.

  16. Will do as bid, I do love him, he seems like a real man, not a boyish guy. Just read an article today IN NY TImes about how ads too are always more ironic than hipsters wearing a Justin Beiber t-shirt. That's why we can never understand them

  17. I loved it and Javier in his gay villian trope was just super duper.

  18. I have such fond memories of going to see the Roger Moore era Bond movies with my late Dad, such a rare treat going to the cinema then. Not seen any of the recent ones, will have to rectify that!
