Blonde ambition.......

I’ve been thinking, it must be quite nice when you’re old and grey, to be blonde. Now, I do realise I’m in the lucky position of being a bit old but not having any grey hair …….. well about 5 around the temples at the last count. My father’s hair was practically black until the day he died …..some kind of legacy from the Spanish Armada that washed up on the Dorset coast so I’m told…… and there is barely a fistful of grey hair on my Mum’s head or amongst her sisters, so I don’t think it’s likely to happen any day soon. However, I met a brilliant woman who is in her 60s and wears her thick, wavy hair long and in 50 shades of blonde. She dresses in white and cream and lives in a white and cream house with blonde wood floorboards. And looks fabulous. Everywhere is clean and sweet scented. And clean. Very clean. It’s like being in a White Company advert.

I was blonde once. It took five hours to strip my hair of its natural colour, with chemicals that are probably illegal now. Halfway through the procedure my hair had turned neon orange, I looked like the man who fell to earth, there was no turning back. Eventually, I materialised from the salon with my bleached blonde mop. Being of an olive complexion with very dark eyebrows it was definitely a look. What can I say …. I was young. As it grew out I often wore a faux-fur, Davy Crockett style hat with a tail…… it was the 80s…… you couldn’t tell where the salt ‘n’ pepper hat finished and my salt ‘n’ pepper hair started.

“Darling, coffee?” my elderly blonde friend asks in her husky voice, reaching for white mugs kept in a cream cupboard, big blue eyes peeping out from beneath her long, stripy-blonde fringe. Perhaps I don’t want to be blonde when I get older, perhaps I just want to be her.

Top tip:go Caribbean in the snow with Lindt dark chocolate with coconut.....Bounty grows up.

  1. Hello:
We so love the sound of your 'blonde' friend living in her immaculate, white and cream styled house and serving, presumably 'latte', from her similarly coloured mugs. It really does inspire one to start again or, in our cases, at the very least to book a hair appointment.

  2. I'm blonde and grey and old - my house isn't very clean though!

  3. I think I want to be your friend and would love to be her! I do have bleached blonde hair, so much easier to hide the greys, you are so lucky to not have any!

  4. I'm thinking of zipping right past blonde and going white. Your friend and her home sound wonderful but I think that it would be nervewracking trying to maintain a white and cream house with three energetic dogs to contend with.

  5. Love the sound of white and cream house but it would be a no no with my lads!! Have a great weekend:)

  6. Just love the sound of that house.. aspirational for me too. Perhaps with a few practical neutrals thrown in for good measure.

Sadly I didn't stop at blonde. I went green. Fluorescent green. My parents didn't talk to me for a week.

  7. That was an interesting comment about the Spanish Armada...I believe the 'food' i.e. sheep swam ashore on Portland....obviously some of the sailors did too.

i intend to stay blonde as long as possible....hurrah.

  8. Wow your friend sounds worthy of a spread in Vogue, to be that centred and sure and blonde, fascinating. I can't give up my blonde but now am horrifically grey and have to dye every four weeks. Last time with the straightening and the dying and a few over the top cheap and nasty blow outs in New York, the top layer went crazy wirey.

  9. Your friend sounds super chic... and lucky you... no grey... I have given in to mine... but I do miss my totally blond days...:) Happy weekend... xv

  10. I started to wonder if your friend could find anything in her cleanly cream/blonde home... Put it down to jealousy. And we won't think about grey.

  11. I have a friend just like that too, she works very hard at it though.

My grey is covered, being a brunette it shows too much. I can't give in to it - my Mum still has dark hair (assisted) I just couldn't go grey before her. I have a dear friend going through chemo at the moment and she lost her hair in week 2, so I am just grateful to have hair right now.

  12. You write very well! And your text is witty too.

My grey is covered by brown color...I would love to stop to coloring my hair... maybe someday...

  15. Please tell me your friend lives on her own with no men or animals to mess it up. Living with four men (that's not as bad as it sounds, I have 3 sons!) and a dog I can only dream of a cream and white house. I do let the hairdresser make me blonde though! Julie x

  16. I am a redhead who is slowly fading into blonde and I don't like it. Once a ginger, and all that. Being referred to as blonde is likely to send me into a murderous rage :-(

  17. Sounds like we have the same genetics, hair wise. Not Spanish exactly, but not quickly gray either! I have a few strands. I think gray is a crown of wisdom, but hard to look at it that way sometimes! LOL. Loved your story here -- well both of them, the lady and your hair story!!

  20. Your friend's existence sounds fragrant and calm - just lovely. I like the idea of going tonal at some point but being such a clot I'd probably have to avoid a completely white/cream look as I know I'd just make it grubby and ruin the effect.

  21. The Spanish Armada line made me smile. My fathers family came from the lowlands of Scotland. All olive skinned, jet black wavy hair, and very Mediterean looking. They always blamed the Spanish Armada for blowing off course.

  22. I'm blond, darkening. I would lighten, but lazy sod that I am, that would mean roots. Nothing wrong with looking better, if you can keep it up. Strange that people people sneer at the vanity of nose jobs or botox, and yet no one questions the benefits of orthodontia. I guess dentistry has the better publicist.

  23. As a formerly dark hair/blue eyed girl who starting graying in my 20's (eeek!) I'm all about the blonde! Roots or 'gold' with a touch of silver looks so much better than a skunk stripe.
I love your descriptions and lucky you to have such great genes! Happy Tuesday!!

  25. I envy those "white" houses with the sanded boards and little bowls of stones, that kind of thing. Makes me feel a bit disappointed that I could never maintain such a place.

I'm starting to go slightly grey, but I'm a man and we're lucky--I think it suits a man heading towards 50.

  26. My BFF just went platinum blonde and looks AMAZING! She's fairly gray and had been coloring her hair a dark red-- Now blonde and it's a total transformation. It suits her.

I'm nearly 55 and still don't color my hair, but I'm getting close. My hair is very dark so blonde is probably not in my future :-(

  27. I'm lucky I still have good blonde colour with a bit of grey mixed in ! My grandmother kept her brown locks 'til she died in her eighties. My mother a red head is now white !

  28. So jealous! I'm 38 and have been coloring my hair for years. Will have to for the rest of my life. Sigh... Love the blonde though!
