A Christmas cracker......

I know we're dashing through December ..... if not through the snow.....but I'm not really feeling it this year. I don't care who knows if I've been naughty or nice, sleigh bells can ring I'm not listening and baby, I don't care if it's cold outside.

I went to Judith Owen and Harry Shearer's Holiday Sing-Along and sang-along......... glorianaing and jingle-belling and walking in a winter wonderland; I've bought my card to make Christmas cards, started hiding presents under jumpers and in the back of my closet where I shall forget I've put them and just baked my second batch of mince pies in three days (pastry from scratch, mincemeat from a jar..... life's too short) but still, it's not beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I've bought a large, pink, not-actually-Victorian glass bauble and am wearing my Sarah Lund meets Santa, Killing sweater in strawberry with a pink, green and yellow pattern, and have collected jars to fill with homemade chilli jam (so much easier to make than it sounds) to give as gifts and am drinking whisky and ginger to get into the spirit.......any spirit. But the spark and glow of yuletide has yet to burst forth and rise up from the ashes of Christmas past, fill my empty stocking-of-joy and raise a cup of cheer to one and all. Hopefully the cold snap of a turkey drumstick, crackle of re-gifted wrapping paper and pop of fizzy wine will fill the bleak mid-winter air and soon I will begin to feel a lot like Christmas.

Did anyone see Black Mirror: The National Anthem, Sunday night, Ch.4 ? I've never been much of a fan of Charlie Brooker, who wrote it, till now: it was brilliant. Fabulously acted by Rory Kinnear and Lindsay Duncan, this pig's tale of the unexpected had me squealing in hysterics and horror. Go watch it again if you missed it.

Top tip: Mrs. White's Physick Rose Youth Serum, it's utterly delicious.

  2. I agree with you; I just can't get into my normal Christmas mood.

Mind you, my normal Christmas attitude would put Scrooge to shame.

It's the bloody weather down here, it's just too sunny and warm. We had to put on the AC, as the temp hit 23ÂșC today.

Completely agree with the Whisky and Green Ginger. Best warming drink ever, with Hot Buttered Rum a close second.

Anyway, don't worry. You'll soon get into the festive spirit after you've seen the BBC's re-re-re-re-re-re-run of the Sound of Music, the Great Escape and of course Mary Poppins. (oops. Forgot the Morcambe and Wise reruns as well)

No wonder the poor Samaratans do record business around this festive season.

    Merry Bloody Christmas.

  3. Beginning to doubt Christmas is coming as we've not had a single card yet - either our friends have forgotten us or they're as bad as us in the getting organised stakes.

  4. I know!! I blame Mr Cameron and the French and German PM's - they are not playing nicely and its not making for a party with a happy atmosphere!! I have already done a bottle of sherry and a dozen mince pies on my own though! xxx

  7. Can't say I share your enthusiasm for The National Anthem. I thought the central idea of the Prime Minister being forced to fuck a pig, and the entire nation gleefully watching, was completely incredible. But maybe there's more lunacy out there than I realise.

  8. I made mince pies last night and gorged on them - still hasn't done the trick.

  9. Thanks for the tips, both for oil and tv, will check them out. Forcing myself to be Christmassy, going to girls bauble swap tonight, sounds rubbish but is the best fun.

  10. I hear you. I feel as if I am on remote and someone else has the controls. Maybe once I've had a few parties tucked under my ever expanding belt, it might feel a bit more festive and less pedestrian

  11. Each year, I feel the same, waiting for the christmas spirit to arrive, and then suddenly, it just does. This year, it happened as I was watched a close, childless, friend dressed up as Santa, and then heard him talk about the moment he realised the wonder of helping children to believe in magic and goodness. Absolutely lovely. I hope your spirit arrives very soon :)

  13. I really enjoyed Black Mirror - we went up to bed after it and argued for ages about whether he should have done it or not. Tartarus is firmly in the Never Give In To Kidnappers camp - which is worth remembering if I ever get MEGA-FAMOUS.

Hope you have got those mince pies sorted out by now. I just bought mine - 2 packets for the price of one. I am a slut.

  14. You don't feel Christmassy on Dec 7th because it's NOT CHRISTMAS.Good god, woman, you would burn out by Dec 20th and spend all Christmas day taking down the tree and burning wrapping paper in the garden. Last post day before Christmas is quite early enough to start feeling Christmassy in my opinion!

Loved Black Mirror - astonishing telly - puts all that reality tat to shame.
